“Recorded live at Bigtone Records in New Orleans in the spring of 2023. “Royal Street Blues'' is the latest solo album by Folkfaces frontman Tyler Westcott. A concept album and love letter to New Orleans & the music of Louisiana.
“Royal Street Blues” features three Westcott originals: the nostalgia soaked “Back in the Day”, the brooding topical juxtaposition of “Mardi Gras In Ukraine”, & busking anthem and title track “Royal Street Blues”. All other tracks were written by Louisiana born musicians. Westcott offers renditions of Allen Toussaint, Dr. John, Danny Barker, as well as a swamp pop song and Cajun tune. Westcott gathered an impressive group of locals to perform. The songs are filled with rolling piano, fiddle, washboard, tenor banjo and the classic New Orleans horn trio sound of clarinet, trombone and trumpet.
With the knowledgeable Big Jon Atkinson behind the console and the band all in one room recording live to tape the record has a warm and fuzzy beautiful old timey sound. 11 tracks were cut in two days using vintage RCA ribbon microphones some of which were used by the likes of Nat King Cole and others.
